How does the United States government define poverty and how are those numbers used to determine what government programs Americans qualify for?
In this video series, we’ll cover how the government defines poverty (using a formula called the “Official Poverty Measure”) and the historical and current poverty rates in the United States. In 2023, 11% of Americans lived below the poverty line and are eligible for programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Medicaid, and Headstart.
