What is Subsidized Housing? | Episode 3 of Just the Facts: Do you Qualify?
More than a third of Americans don’t have access to affordable housing (which the government defines as median housing costs that are less than 30% of a household’s income). The US government provides housing assistance in several ways through the Department of Housing and Development (HUD). Housing Choice Vouchers (section 8) pay a portion of a household’s rent and utilities. Project-Based Rental Assistance contracts with landlords to keep rents affordable for some units. Public Housing units are owned and managed by local housing authorities and funded by HUD. Wait times for these programs often exceeds two years. A tax credit also exists for developers who build or renovate affordable housing (the Low Income Housing Tax Credit or LIHTC).
